OB and Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra returns to Bryanston for Conducting Workshop

9 May 2025

Old Bryanstonian and Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Mark Wigglesworth, returned to Bryanston earlier this week to lead a Conducting Workshop.

A group of Bryanston pupils from Year 9 (D) upwards were invited to watch him lead a rehearsal of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra before coming to Bryanston to run a workshop with the pupils.

As well as being an OB (C ‘82), Mark is one of our esteemed Arts Advisory Board members.

Pupils took it in turns to conduct the famous opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (played as a piano duet by Mr Scott and Mr Iles). Mark Wigglesworth worked with the pupils on conducting technique and how to bring out their interpretation of the dramatic music from the performers.

Director of Music Xavier Iles, commented: “It was a fascinating and insightful evening as our pupils learned to better understand the fundamentals of conducting and how to connect emotionally with a piece of music to express their individuality.”
