Maths

Just as we can understand more about the world through philosophy, art, and poetry, so too can we understand the world better through maths.

Both abstract and practical, maths is fundamental in all walks of life from astrophysics to AI programming.

The Maths department’s job is to provide pupils with creative problem-solving, analytic, and abstract reasoning skills.

We focus on real-world applications, and provide diverse learning approaches, so that Bryanston pupils become proficient in Maths in ways that will help them in all areas of life from personal finances to their professional lives.

Tailored maths support and mentorship

Not all pupils find maths easy to grasp. We therefore offer support through small classes and regular maths clinics, to help pupils overcome challenges and build confidence.

Personalised support and mentorship empower every pupil to thrive in maths and follow their own unique mathematical journey.

Empowering pupils with real-life maths skills

Studying maths goes beyond exams. It equips pupils with practical skills applicable to all areas of life. We teach pupils to use maths in real-life scenarios, promoting problem-solving, critical thinking, and logical reasoning.

Pupils thus grasp its relevance in fields like finance, engineering, science, and technology. They appreciate how maths enhances decision-making and analytical abilities, and provides a valuable tool kit for navigating the complexities of the world beyond the classroom.

We are digitally focused and we integrate technology into our classrooms, empowering pupils to explore complex mathematical problems and solutions.

Exploring maths beyond the classroom

Pupils are encouraged to participate in national challenges. Many have entered and been successful at UKMT’s Senior and Intermediate Mathematics Challenges and the British Mathematics Olympiad.

We also took part in the Junior UKMT maths team challenge in 2024 when it restarted after COVID.

Our top pupils often qualify for the further Olympiad and Kangaroo rounds.

These events allow pupils to showcase their skills and compete nationally. They cultivate a genuine passion for maths, rewarding teamwork and inspiring the exploration of innovative solutions.

We also run maths ECAs to encourage pupils to apply their maths knowledge in more challenging and competitive environments, and organise events at the school throughout the year.

THE Mathematics CURRICULUM AT BRYANSTON

We offer a comprehensive GCSE, A Level and IB maths curriculum.

  • Maths GCSE

Pupils follow the Edexcel iGCSE Maths curriculum, giving them a solid understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills.

Pupils develop a strong foundation in numbers, algebra, ratio, proportion and rates of change, geometry and measures, probability and statistics.

Our top GCSE set are stretched beyond the GCSE syllabus and entered for the AQA Certificate Level 2 Further Maths, developing their algebra skills and introducing them to new areas of maths that supports any future maths studies in the Sixth Form.

  • Maths A Level

We offer A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths Edexcel courses (with options for further statistics and further mechanics). These courses are known for their rigour and intellectual stimulation and are highly respected by universities and employers.

A Level Further Maths expands upon the regular A Level syllabus, covering advanced topics. It is typically taken alongside maths and two other subjects. This makes it ideal for pupils aspiring to pursue maths or related fields at university.

  • Mathematics IB Diploma

We provide Higher Level, Standard Level, and Mathematical Studies Standard Level within the IB curriculum. The rigorous Higher Level course is for pupils aspiring to pursue a degree in maths or a closely related field.

Standard Level is suitable for pupils intending to pursue a degree with some mathematical content, such as biology or geography. Mathematical Studies is ideal for pupils who may not continue studying maths beyond school but still wish to develop essential maths skills.

  • Beyond Bryanston

After completing their studies in Maths our pupils are well-equipped to pursue a wide range of future paths. Those with a strong passion for maths can continue their journey by pursuing degrees in maths, statistics, engineering, computer science, economics, or other related fields.

The analytical and problem-solving skills they acquire serve as a solid foundation for success in various careers. Some of our pupils pursue careers in finance, data analysis, research, engineering, technology, and academia.

Whether entering the workforce or pursuing further education, mathematical expertise can open doors to a plethora of opportunities.
