STEM pupils enjoy an unforgettable day at Williams Formula 1

27 June 2026

Thirty Year 10 Design & Technology and Triple Science pupils enjoyed an unforgettable day at the Williams F1 STEM Experience in Grove, Oxfordshire, on Friday.

The visit perfectly combined science, engineering, technology and teamwork, all alongside the excitement of Formula One. From the moment they arrived, our pupils were immersed in the world of elite motorsport engineering, guided by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic Williams F1 Education Team, whose passion made the day both inspiring and engaging.

A major highlight was exploring Williams’ incredible collection of historic Formula One cars, with championship-winning machines with the combined value of £200 million. Our pupils then enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the Williams facility, gaining a fascinating insight into the innovation, precision and teamwork that drive one of Formula One’s most successful teams.

Everyone at Williams was so committed to ensuring that we all had a brilliant day, despite their remote team locked into Practice 1 of Austrian Grand Prix!

The excitement stepped up a level as everyone took park in three simulator races around Barcelona, Silverstone and Monaco, where students experienced the thrill of professional-grade racing simulators and competed against one another.

The standout activity was the ‘Crash Test’ STEM Challenge. Working in teams of six, our pupils designed, built and tested their own formula one nose cones while managing their material and manufacturing budgets. The challenge combined design, engineering, physics, materials science, innovation, budgeting and teamwork as each group competed to create the most effective impact-absorbing structure.

The enthusiasm, creativity and collaboration shown throughout the day were outstanding, with pupils embracing every challenge and gaining a genuine appreciation of how STEM skills are applied to the real world of Formula One.

Our visit was made even more special as it came during the final week of the Williams F1 Education department, making Bryanston one of the last schools to benefit from this exceptional programme.

We felt incredibly fortunate that our students experienced what is widely regarded as one of the UK’s finest STEM enrichment opportunities.

Reflecting on the day, Mr Mills commented:

This was the best STEM educational trip I have ever been involved with. It was exceptionally well organised by the Williams team; a special thank you to Kay, Matt and the rest of the department for making it such a memorable experience for our pupils. This was far more than just a school visit – it was an inspiring glimpse into the future of engineering and innovation, and an experience our students will remember for years to come’.

Bryanston would like to thank the outstanding Williams F1 Education Team for their inspiration, professionalism and dedication to STEM education over the years.

Thank you to all the staff involved and the house staff who had to get up early to get the pupils ready to leave on time.

Chris Mills, Head of Design & Technology
