The Junior and Senior Saxton Singing Competition Final took place last week, adjudicated by the finalist of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 2003, Elizabeth Donovan.

It was a jam-packed evening with the juniors singing one song and the seniors singing two contrasting pieces. Elizabeth commented on how professional the singers were with walking on stage, commanding the space, thanking their accompanists and general quality of singing, which she said was impressive.

It was a tough job deciding on a winner in each section as the standard was so high but, after some deliberation, the winner of the junior section was Caitlyn H (Year 10, C) singing ‘Maybe This Time’ with Highly Commended Awards going to Charlie F (Year 10, C) ‘If I Were a Rich Man’, Lizzy O (Year 11, B) ’Second-Hand Suit’, Margot S (Year 10, C) ‘Lay Me Down’ and Bertie H (Year 11, B) ‘Après un reve’.

The senior section winner was Nancy G (Year 13, A2) singing ‘Come Away Death’ and ‘Du bist wie eine blume’ with Highly Commended Awards going to Zola S (Year 12, A3) ‘Flow My Tears’ and ‘Widmung’, James W (Year 12, A3) ‘Deposuit Potentes’ and ‘Un’aura Amorosa’ and Anna B (Year 12, A3) ‘Go, Lovely Rose’ and ‘I Can’t Say No’.

Director of Music, Xavier Iles said: “It was a very successful and enjoyable night with huge potential beaming through.”
