Bryanston welcomes the De Kooning Ensemble for masterclass and concert

Our Music Department was thrilled to welcome the De Kooning Ensemble to Bryanston to coach pupils learning Mendelssohn’s Octet and Grieg’s String Quartet in G Minor.

OB cellist Evie Coplan is one of the founding members of the De Kooning Ensemble and we are all very grateful to her for returning to Bryanston to coach our string pupils and perform alongside them.

Director of Music Xavier Iles commented: “Our relationships with Old Bryanstonians are very important to us. The chance to interact with musicians who have forged a successful path in the music industry is of huge benefit to our pupils.”

The De Kooning Ensemble was founded in 2019 while all of its members were studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The ensemble strives to make chamber music more prominent in young people’s lives and works with composers to push the boundaries of the chamber music repertoire.

Head of Strings Mrs Scott commented: “The afternoon coaching session was incredibly inspiring, and pupils gained first-hand insight and practical experience in how to listen and communicate in an ensemble.

“The evening concert provided the opportunity for pupils to perform the Mendelssohn and Grieg as well as hear the De Kooning Ensemble perform piano quarters by Schumann and Suk. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the De Kooning Ensemble for providing such a memorable experience for our pupils.”
