Bryanston pupils participate in the Debating Matters South West Championship
A resilient and diligent team of Bryanston pupils took part in the Debating Matters South West Championship on Thursday 23 January.

Bryanston’s debating team included Raphi D, Sylvester M, Ben J, Vasco de C, Ines F, Grace Y, Connor W and Felix B-S, accompanied by Ms Quarrell, Mr Kraft and Ms Zajicek. The debate was hosted at Sherborne Girls and took place between eight schools from across Dorset and surrounding counties.
This was the first time Bryanston had competed in this competition and the team was delighted with the victory against The Gryphon School, won by Raphi D and Sylvester M, debating the topic ‘Autonomous vehicles will make driving safer’.
At the end of the enthralling day, the South West trophy was awarded to Sturminster Newton Sixth Form. Three topics in total were debated by Bryanston pupils against Sherborne Boys, The Gryphon School and Sturminster Newton High.

Ms Quarrell, senior tutor and history teacher at Bryanston, commented: “We were so proud to be only very closely defeated by Sturminster Newton High School in one of our debates, as they went on to be the overall winners of the competition. The day certainly helped cement the interest and commitment of our team and as we made some good contacts with other local schools, we hope to be able to continue to work with them and set up more debating events in the coming year.”
