Exciting week for prep pupils visiting RSPB Arne and Cranborne Chase Cider Farm

RSPB Arne visit

On Monday 29 September, Years 3 and 4 enjoyed the late Autumn sunshine with a guided visit around RSPB Arne, where we explored the diverse habitats and ecosystems, including lowland heathland, ancient oak woodland, and coastal wetlands. Along the way, pupils learned how the natural balance of these important habitats are maintained by techniques like grazing with cattle, ponies and pigs.

In the ancient woodland, we collected sweet chestnuts, which we roasted in Forest School later in the week and identified seven different species of fungi. Overlooking Poole Harbour, we were fortunate to observe an osprey feeding along with oystercatchers, egrets and avocets. On our walk back through heathland, we were joined by one of Arne’s inquisitive resident pigs, much to the excitement of the children.

As we returned to the minibus, a white-tailed sea eagle was seen soaring overhead, completing the final tick on our scavenger hunt tick list.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, giving us a greater understanding of our local wildlife and the importance of protecting and managing natural habitats.

Pre Prep Myncen Farm visit

Reception and Nursery had an exciting morning on Thursday 2 October when they travelled to Cranborne Chase Cider Farm to watch our freshly harvested school apples being turned into delicious apple juice.

Our day started out watching a film showing all the special machinery used on the farm to gather the apples. We then went to watch the whole process of our school apples being sorted, washed and pressed between giant rollers into delicious apple juice, which we all were keen to sample. Around 600 litres of school juice was produced which will be pasteurised and bottled and ready for parents to purchase next week.

After a quick snack and more fresh apple juice, we set off to explore the history of Myncen farm, looking at archaeological discoveries including neolithic arrow heads, bronze age and iron age pottery, Roman mosaic tiles, and jewellery and clay pots. We even got to explore the replica Iron Age round house. After such a busy morning, a well-deserved play in the park was in order before heading back to school for lunch.
