Sociology

Sociology offers pupils the opportunity to explore society and understand how people live together within it. The subject focuses on groups of people, social behaviour and the structures that shape our lives, encouraging pupils to question assumptions and think critically about the world around them.

Our Sociology curriculum at BRYANSTON

  • Sociology A Level

This course (AQA) has been introduced in 2026 in response to growing interest from pupils wishing to study Sociology, Anthropology and related subjects at University.

Sociology develops an open-minded and empathetic approach to social issues, supported by the study of sociological research, evidence and theory. Teaching is interactive and varied, with lessons including debate, data handling and research.

Lessons explore contemporary questions such as why girls outperform boys at GCSE, who benefits from crime, and why marriage rates are declining.

Sociology naturally links to Politics, Geography and current affairs, helping pupils to become more engaged with society beyond the classroom.

    Expectation and future

Pupils will be expected to be confident in essay writing so should have obtained a GCSE Grade 6 in English and a humanities subject.

This course assesses pupils in research methods as well as data manipulation and analysis so a confident level of maths is needed at Grade 5 or above.

Sociology prepares pupils well for further study or careers in social policy, politics, economics, management and public service.
