Prep Recital Celebrates World Poetry Day

24 March 2026

The Prep School Poetry Recital Competition was an exceptional occasion, reflecting the remarkable talent and dedication of our pupils. Over the last half term, each pupil in Years 3 – 8 carefully selected and prepared a poem based on a given theme,  before performing the poem in front of their class audience. From these initial rounds, finalists were chosen to participate in the Poetry Recital held on Friday 20th March.

The breadth and quality of the poetry presented was truly impressive, spanning the playful wit of Spike Milligan, the classic elegance of Wordsworth, and even several creative original compositions written by pupils themselves.

The final recital was of an outstanding standard. Year 3 and 4 pupils delivered engaging performances on the theme of Nature, followed by Year 5 and 6 who explored Environment with maturity and insight. Upper Prep pupils concluded the event with powerful and reflective interpretations of Change. Across all year groups, pupils demonstrated excellent articulation, confidence, and expressive delivery, resulting in performances of a consistently high calibre.

We were honoured to welcome Mr Fowler-Watt as our judge, whose expertise and appreciation of poetry were invaluable. He faced an exceptionally difficult task in selecting winners, noting that the standard was so high that every pupil deserved recognition. After careful deliberation, shields were awarded to Claudia (Year 3/4), Verity (Year 5/6) and Kara (Upper Prep).

The overall winner of the afternoon was Skeyla in Year 8, whose performance stood out for its poise, clarity, and emotional impact.

This memorable event was a true celebration of literary appreciation, performance skill and the outstanding standard of achievement within our Prep School.

Winners:

Skyela – Still I Rise, Maya Angelou

Verity – Silly Old Baboon, Spike Milligan

Kara – The Changes by Anonymous

Claudia  – The Sunshine Has A Pleasant Way by Annette Wynne

Well done to all involved.
