Don’t Man Up, Open Up

5 December 2025

Bryanston marked this year’s Movember campaign with a series of events designed to spark conversation, challenge stigma and get the whole community moving in support of men’s health.

The Movember charity’s message – “Healthier conversations, Healthier conceptions, Healthier communities” – was brought to life at Bryanston through a programme of activities led by Teacher of PE & PSRE and Assistant Head of Rugby, Jonny Owen. His mantra for the month was – Don’t Man Up, Open Up.

Over the month, staff and pupils enjoyed a tea and coffee morning with live music to encourage relaxed, open conversations. There was also a special BryRadio broadcast on International Men’s Day, a range of sports team challenges themed around the number 60, a Men’s Mental Health Assembly at Bryanston Prep, and a whole-school Fun Run to round off the campaign.

The BryRadio show, poignantly titled “Words carry more weight than weights do”, featured pupil Matteo P interviewing Head of Rugby Nick Williams and Jonny Owen. In celebration of men and boys, the discussion focused on how to support men when they choose to speak up about their struggles. A recording of the programme is available for the school community to listen back to here.

Sport also played a central role with team captains across the school setting challenges built around the number 60, representing the 60 men around the world who die by suicide every hour. Teams rose to the occasion with challenges such as rowing 60km collectively, swimming 60 lengths of the pool and scoring 60 netball goals in a session.

At Bryanston Prep, boys in Years 7 and 8 attended a dedicated Assembly on men’s mental health. Jonny Owen encouraged pupils to question stereotypes about how men “should” behave, and explored the many positive ways they can express themselves, look after their wellbeing and show appreciation for others, regardless of differences.

The month-long programme concluded with a Fun Run on the school’s sports pitches, showcasing 60 minutes of movement for all staff and pupils. Everyone was invited to walk or run any distance within the hour, with music and hot drinks available.

Reflecting on the campaign, Jonny Owen said the focus had been on combining awareness with action:

“If our pupils remember one thing from Movember, I hope it’s that talking about how you feel is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether it’s over a cup of tea, during a training session or on a walk with a friend, those conversations can save lives.”
