Our Year 9 (D) Drama pupils performed George Orwell’s 1984 from 14-17 May, to rave reviews.

Collectively, the hard-working cast produced a haunting and thought-provoking interpretation of a classic, delving into the oppressive world of Big Brother, exploring the nuances of control, resistance, and the human spirit’s resilience.

Cast members include Albert M-G, Chrissie H, Lucian de R, Bess B-M, Oz G, Amelia L, Francesca L, Charlie F, Freddie B, Edward P, Jesse C-M, Hadley R-W, Bea M, Macy G, Meghan C, Rosie A, Lulu M and Max H.

The production team, consisting of William V (video and lighting design), Liz S (tech support) and Max M, Ethan C and Celina T (stage crew), used innovative staging, lighting and sound design to immerse the audience into a world where reality is distorted and freedom is an illusion.

Director Katie Richards commented: “When we first started 1984 back in December, I knew we were taking on a challenge. Orwell’s dystopian vision is not only a literary classic but also a profound commentary on surveillance, truth, and individuality.

“Working with the D pupils has been an enlightening experience. Their enthusiasm, insight, and commitment have been the driving force behind this production, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved. The production is a testament to the power of youth in interpreting and presenting such complex ideas.”
