Bryanston-backed Safe Motherhood Unit opens in Malawi

5 November 2025

As we build up to the Nepal Charity Fair this weekend, we’re delighted to share that a fundraising project led by Bryanston pupils in 2020, the Safe Motherhood Unit (SMU), has officially opened in Malawi. The clinic is expected to serve around 30,000 people.

“The Safe Motherhood Unit is finally open and fully operational… it’s already full every day,” the project leads, Heather and Nigel Palmer, reported. “Many thanks for all you did so long ago!”

Poppy Thomas, Bryanston’s Head Girl in 2020, shared information on the new facility and passed on thanks to the Bryanston community for its support.

Alongside the SMU, a Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) unit opened in May, bringing maternity and early childhood services under one roof. “Both are linked as we’re focused on early identification of babies with SEND so they can be assessed and receive early intervention therapy from birth,” said Heather. The centre is delivering physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech & language therapy, believed to be the first comprehensive service of its kind in Malawi.

Supporters paid tribute to everyone who helped launch the fundraising nearly six years ago, especially the Bryanston team that coordinated the Charities Weekend.

This weekend, the Bryanston community will come together once again for this year’s longstanding annual Nepal Charity Fair with a full programme of pupil-led fundraising activities and events. Right4Children, is an NGO dedicated to improving the lives and living standards of disadvantaged children, young people, and their families.
