Performance Sports Programme

Aims and Philosophy

We are committed to providing world-class support to our young athletes who are looking to become professional sportsmen or women through a bespoke Performance Sports Programme. The goal is to put them in the best possible position at the end of their time at Bryanston to enjoy a long and successful sporting career.

At Bryanston we pride ourselves on providing a supportive infrastructure that will enable and encourage young adults to excel in whatever they are interested in, whether it be academic, sport, art, drama or music.

However, we also firmly believe in providing pupils with a well-rounded education, giving them exposure to all the facilities and expertise that the school has to offer. Therefore we seek to provide this support of excellence in a way that fully complements their whole school experience.

The Programme Structure

To support the long-term athletic development of Bryanston’s young sportsmen and women, the Performance Sports Programme provides a structured framework throughout a pupil’s time at Bryanston, starting with generic skills and techniques and moving to a bespoke, sport-specific programme for each individual involved.

The programme is made up of five key strands: athleticism; skill; psychology; academic studies; and health and well-being.

Athleticism

Pupils on the Performance Sports Programme benefit from individual strength and conditioning (S&C) and speed, agility and quickness (SAQ) programmes throughout their five years at Bryanston. These programmes will ensure that pupils have a solid foundation in movement skills, and joints are fully strengthened and core strength and stability are maximised ahead of weight training. This not only improves pupils’ ability to perform on the pitch, but also reduces the risk of injury. Pupils will have key athletic metrics tested each half of term providing athletes, coaches and parents with regular feedback on their athletic improvements.

Skill

Pupils on the Performance Sports Programme take part in sport-specific skills workshops throughout each school year, run by both school coaches and coaches from local professional and national league clubs. Regular skill tests specific to the sport or sports that they play will help to inform pupils’ short- and medium-term goals.

Psychology

Teenage years for both male and female pupils are busy, complicated and often confusing times. The Bryanston Performance Sports Programme will provide various levels of psychological support to help pupils navigate this frequently difficult period and at the same time help them to maximise their sporting and academic achievements.

Academic tutors, alongside a mentor and regular sports psychology workshops, will ensure pupils are fully involved and successful in all aspects of school life, as well as monitor progress within the Performance Sports Programme itself.

Academic matters

The Performance Sports Programme is designed to complement fully the other aspects of school life but none more so than a pupil's academic studies. To ensure athletes commit fully to their academic progress, we will expect high levels of academic effort. All pupils at Bryanston are graded on their effort on a weekly basis and any potential negative impact on their academic studies is monitored carefully in consultation with their Hsm and tutor. Reduced attainment in academic subjects could result in a pupil's withdrawal from the Performance Sports Programme.

Health and well-being

In order to fully reach their potential it is important that athletes are not only taken care of when they are injured, but that they also learn to take care of themselves and develop healthy habits that will set them up for long athletic careers. Therefore the Performance Sports Programme also covers injury prevention and rehabilitation, and nutrition, in consultation with the school medical centre and physiotherapists.
