Core PE

The principle behind Core PE at Bryanston is simple: to make physical education both fun and focused.

The year is split into small blocks of six weeks, when D pupils (year 9) enjoy many different physical activities. Each group has a double period (1 hour 10 minutes) or PE per week and this continues throughout the year. The areas of focus include:

  • Swimming
  • SAQ (Speed Agility Quickness)
  • Body literacy and footwork
  • Core Strengthening
  • Cardiovascular fitness training
  • Invasion game principles (including handball, basketball, rugby, football, hockey, netball)
  • Basic gymnastics
  • Dodgeball
  • Circuit training
  • Badminton
  • Squash
  • Tennis
  • Softball

The philosophy is to allow a real sport-for-all approach, and groups are encouraged to enjoy a wide range of physical activities. We aim to work on footwork and strength to help all pupils move more fluidly and with better control, in order to produce young sportspeople who have a strong and honed proprioception of their bodies.

In C (year 10), pupils again enjoy PE for a double period per week, every other half term. PE lessons in C follow a similar pattern of activities and pupils are expected to continue their journey of development with more technique-focused coaching.

In B (year 11), pupils benefit from a double period of PE in two of the half terms in the autumn and spring terms. (There is no PE in the summer term to allow a greater focus on exams.) The focus for PE in B is participation in a range of different sports and the pupils are encouraged to play and enjoy the experience rather than work specifically on technical issues.
