Bryanston Science Society looks to the sky

On Friday 19 September the Bryanston Science Society welcomed Anna Scaife of Southampton University for the first of this term’s Science Society lectures.

Anna gave a fascinating lecture on using galaxy clusters as testing grounds for thermodynamic principles. Her audience, made up of Bryanston pupils from across the year groups as well as several members of staff, was taken on a journey to the farthest reaches of space, where conditions are extreme, but familiar rules of physics still apply, like the ideal gas law.

The lecture finished with exciting news about Anna’s involvement in building the largest telescope in the world, crossing continents and providing regeneration opportunities for a number of African nations.

At their next lecture the Bryanston Science Society will hear from Daniel Jubb on the subject of ‘Rockets and Records’
