A3 pupils make a start on their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expeditions

At the beginning of the Easter holidays, 26 pupils in A3 started on their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expeditions.

Eight pupils travelled down to Portsmouth with Miss Fazakerley to board the Pride of Bolton; a Ketch skippered by the Tall Ships. The pupils completed a 4-day practice expedition followed by a 4-day qualifying expedition. Travelling along the south coast and around the Isle of Wight, the crew enjoyed the perfect sailing conditions, overcame an engine failure, and ultimately found success. Demonstrating a willingness to learn and the skills to safely master the vessel, all the pupils performed exceptionally well and completed the expedition section of their DofE Award.

Eighteen pupils travelled to the Brecon Beacons, accompanied by Mr Curry, Miss Dowry, and external instructors. The three groups took part in a 4-day practice expedition, ensuring that they covered the necessary skills to safely complete their qualifying expedition later on this year. All 18 pupils performed tremendously well, exceeding expectations, and giving themselves the best possible foundations for a successful qualifying expedition in Snowdonia in July.

Head of Outdoor Education & Pioneering Mr Curry, commented: “Later on this month, 85 pupils in C will take part in the Silver DofE practice expedition. Hopefully we can enjoy the same weather conditions at the end of the holidays as we were lucky enough to have at the start!”
