D public speaking competition

This term we asked D pupils to choose a charitable cause close to their heart, research it carefully and then write a two-three minute speech on that chosen charity. The aim was simple - to inform and to persuade the listener that their case is worth supporting.

The initial speeches were delivered in English classes, with the finalists, as voted for by the class, judged by Mr and Mrs Weatherby. Pupils submitted their recordings as video or audio presentations, with a very high standard very much in evidence.

Highly commended audio versions were Oliver W, Blue M and Jasmine H, Benny R and Lily Z. Well done to all.

The four outstanding winners were:

Third place: Louis C’s compelling speech on behalf of The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Second place: Oliver D’s Attenborough-inspired video on behalf of Save the Elephants.

Joint first place: Esme H for Oxfam; this was a well-considered and well-balanced speech, while Theo C on Calm offered an urgent and powerful appeal on behalf of the charity.

Amazon vouchers and certificates are on the way to the four winners.
