Bryanston mathematicians shine

Six Bryanston pupils were outstanding in the Senior Maths Challenge held earlier in the term, earning gold certificates. Many congratulations to Thomas Dullage, Harry Ellison-Wright, Oli Cornelius-Jones, Stella Wang, Luke Pritchard and Catriona Paget. Bryanston entrants also won seven silver and 16 bronze certificates.

Three Bryanston teams are competing in the National Cipher Challenge which has been running throughout the autumn term. The challenge, a web-based code-cracking competition organised by the University of Southampton, asks teams from schools across the UK to solve a different cipher each week. Well done to team 'My Pi is bigger than yours', consisting of Eric Hoang, Oscar Verdoon, James Bury-Lowe and Henry Ward who won the Week 3 challenge. In the national challenge leader board 'My Pi is bigger than yours' and 'Team E-W', made up of Harry and Bertie Ellison-Wright, are both doing really well, fingers crossed they maintain their positions.

Last week the Bryanston team of Olivia Macmillan-Scott, Oli Cornelius-Jones, Harry Ellison-Wright and Alma Orr-Ewing travelled to Poole Grammar School for the Senior Maths Team Challenge. They put in an excellent performance to finish in second place behind the winners King Edward’s and ahead of 20+ other teams that included Poole Grammar, Sherborne and Canford.

Following their excellent performances in the Senior Maths Challenge, Stella and Harry competed in the British Mathematical Olympiad last week. This is a fantastic achievement as only the top 1000 mathematicians nationally are invited to enter this very prestigious competition. A good performance in the Olympiad may lead to selection for the national team and the opportunity for international competition, so we wish them all the very best of luck.
