Current Affairs: EU Referendum Debate

This year’s A2 Current Affairs Programme finished last Saturday on a real high with a debate on the forthcoming EU Referendum, chaired by one of our governors, Beatrice Hollond.

Speaking for the remain camp was Guy de Selliers, who has worked closely with the European Commission, ably supported by Bryanston sixth formers Katie K and Sam W. Our brexiteers were Elizabeth de Stanford, who sits on the board of Vote Leave, and C pupil (yr 10) Freddie F, who debated maturely and admirably in front of the A2 cohort, and who held his own against some forceful challenges from the remain side. An entry poll before the debate was 85% in favour of the UK remaining a part of the EU and an exit poll saw that figure rise to 88%.

With 73% of the A2 year group eligible to vote in the referendum it was an important opportunity for them to hear both sides of the debate put so clearly and cogently. Thank you to the speakers for their time and sharing their knowledge with our pupils.
