Battlefields Trip 2018

The History and Politics Department travelled to the First World War battlefields of the Western Front with 19 D historians over the Easter holidays.
In three days they visited key sites in Belgium and France, including Ypres, the Somme and Arras. Being there, surrounded by cemeteries, craters, memorials and areas still too dangerous to walk on after a hundred years, gave a powerful sense of the scale of the war and the numbers of men involved.
Telling the stories of individual soldiers (including relatives of some in the group) in the places where the events happened, brought the history alive; few 
will forget standing by the grave of a young soldier in Blighty Valley listening to the last letter he wrote home to his wife the night before he was killed.
A very busy three days, fuelled by delicious food, led by an excellent guide and blessed with surprisingly good weather.
