lecture on Virgil’s Aeneid by Dr Llewelyn Morgan
A classical highpoint of the spring term was a visit in March by Dr Llewelyn Morgan of Brasenose College, Oxford.
He spoke on Virgil’s presentation of Dido and Aeneas in book IV of The Aeneid, giving a fascinating insight into the context of the interlude, Roman attitudes to Dido, and some of the influences upon Virgil, such as Apollonius’s Argonautica. This was a stimulating experience for our sixth-form pupils, all of whom study or will study Aeneid book IV, whether as a Latin text or as part of the Aeneid paper for classical civilisation. It was a great pleasure to welcome visitors from other Classics Departments, both staff and pupils, from Bishop Wordsworth, Canford, Godolphin, Leweston and Sherborne Girls’ School.
