Winners announced for 'Hands, Face & Space' photography competition

As part of the School’s ‘Retreat@Bry’ wellbeing weekend, the Art Department hosted a photography competition.

The competition, entitled ‘Hands, Face & Space’, was launched by Head Girl Teagan G in assembly and pupils were encouraged to take photos over the course of the School’s wellbeing weekend, while enjoying the beauty of the site. Entries were submitted to Mrs Macpherson and the winners have been announced as follows:

Hands – Emily S
Face – Jemima S
Space – Christabel C-J and Helena G

'Hands' by Emily S
'Face' by Jemima S
'Space' by Christabel C-J and Helena G

Teacher of Art Sue Macpherson commented: “Photography is great for mindfulness and engaging with one’s environment and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the pupils that took part in the competition.

“Emily’s photo was chosen as the winner for ‘Hands’ because the shot was well composed and well lit, portraying power in an artist’s hand. The composition, with the slight diagonal leading in from the left, directs your eyes to the main aspect of the subject.

“Jemima’s photo was chosen as the winner for ‘Face’ because it shows an original concept and is full of moody malevolence. The lighting in the photo adds an interesting dynamic to an already strong image.

“And finally, I chose Christabel C-J and Helena G as joint winners for ‘Space’ because the photo showed an interesting low viewpoint to add to the feeling of space and isolation. Although the figure is a small part of the whole picture, the lamp and the viewpoint make it the main subject of the photograph.”
