Bryanston Geography teacher awarded for mapping skills

Bryanston Geography teachers recently attended a British Cartographic Society event at Ordnance Survey, Southampton to help them maintain their skills and knowledge.

Two members of the Geography department, Steve Richardson and Kate Andrews, attended a one day, digital mapping training course at the Ordnance Survey in Southampton on November 2.

Attendees included staff from Ordance Survey, Office for National Statistics, A to Z Streetmaps, mapping companies and various other organisations, including Government/Local authorities and others fully commercial, making maps for bus/rail companies or tourist organisations.

During the day all delegates were given a folder of open data and set a map challenge; design a topographic basemap and add an additional layer of open data to produce a thematic map, considering and applying all important cartographic principles.

Mr Richardson's map (pictured below) won the challenge due to the clearly considered cartographic design principles, through good use of colour and consideration of what map content was important.

Well done Mr Richardson.
