Core PE

PE lessons for pupils in D, C and B (years 9, 10 and 11) form the bedrock of learning in relation to performing sports and physical activities. Rather than specialising in specific sports, lessons have a whole-body approach with reference to body-literacy and functional, foundational movement with a focus on keeping lessons engaging and fun. The content of these lessons is linked to Bryanston’s Performance Sport Programme and has a particular focus on pre-habilitation to limit injuries in the maturing adolescent, alongside health and wellbeing. In line with our key aim of ensuring that sport is enjoyable for everyone, the PE syllabus offers exposure to a vast range of sports, games and physical activities catering to all abilities. With a real sport-for-all approach, the years are split into small blocks to enable all pupils to enjoy a breadth of physical activities from the outset continuing through to year 11.

Games

Bryanston has a proud tradition of producing excellent sports teams in a wide range of games and athletic pursuits, including:

  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Cross country
  • Equestrianism
  • Football
  • Fives
  • Hockey
  • Indoor Hockey
  • Kayaking
  • Lacrosse
  • Netball
  • Rowing
  • Rugby
  • Rugby 7s
  • Squash
  • Tennis

While producing competitive senior teams throughout the School remains a priority, Bryanston does not focus solely on its 1st teams and representative sport is available for all abilities. Games choices are controlled in D and then expand as a pupil moves through the school. Games afternoon activities are also supplemented by the many choices of physical pursuits and games contained within the School's extra-curricular programme.

GCSE

GCSE PE is the starting point of a distinct academic journey for any pupil who has an interest or ability with regards to sport. Pupils will be taught in a variety of practical and theory lessons. Theoretical topics studied include skeleton, muscles, fitness training, drugs in sport, sponsorship and media. In practical lessons pupils are introduced to a variety of activities to help improve their skills and tactical awareness. For more information on GCSE PE, visit the PE subject page.

A level

The School has been running an A level PE course for many years and this has allowed our talented sportspeople the opportunity to gain academic credit for their talents. The School delivers the OCR course which follows on from content studied at GCSE. The focus at A level is on three theoretical concepts:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Skill Acquisition & Sports Psychology
  • Socio-Cultural Issues

IB Sports Health and Exercise

This course was introduced as an academic option in September 2017 and has proved to be a welcome addition in group 4 (science) at both Standard and Higher level. The course incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition, which are studied in the context of sport, exercise and health. Pupils cover a range of core and optional topics, and carry out practical investigations in both laboratory and field settings.
