Bryanston hosts brass quintet, Onyx Brass

Bryanston's Music Department were delighted to welcome Onyx Brass to perform and lead a workshop with Bryanston pupils as part of the school’s Professional Concert Series.
During the afternoon of Friday 26 February Bryanston’s intermediate and higher grade brass pupils took part in an entertaining and inspiring workshop with players from Onyx Brass, one of the leading lights in establishing the brass quintet as a medium for serious chamber music. These pupils then joined forces with the quintet to open the evening’s concert with a piece called Fanfare for the Brighton Festival by Maynard. Four of Bryanston’s music scholars, Luca S (trumpet), Nik L (trumpet), Daniel L (trombone) and Rory H (trombone), then remained on stage to perform Brahms' motet Alas Poor World from Op. 110 arranged by Dave Gordon Shute.
The rest of the programme was: Monteverdi's Opening Ritornello from Vespers, Deus in Adjiutorium; Couperin's Couperin Suite; Handel's Suite from Royal Fireworks, Tim Jackson's amusing vocal poems Anything But; Copland's Three Dance Episodes from Rodeo; Baadsvik's Fnugg and a Broadway selection to finish the wonderful concert.
Many thanks to Onyx Brass, made up of Niall Keatley and Alan Thomas on trumpet, Richard Ashton on horn, Amos Miller on trombone and Dave Gordon Shute on the tuba, for providing us all with such an entertaining, educational and wonderful day of music.
