Organ Recital

On Wednesday 4 February 2015 at 8.15pm in the John Eliot Gardiner Recital Room, Assistant Director of Music (Instrumental) and Head of Keyboard, Graham Scott gave a charming inaugural recital on the Organ generously donated by OB Nick Rocke in 2012.
The organ was commissioned by Mr Rocke and built by the local organ builder, Robin Jennings in 1998. Two A2 students also performed in the concert - Charlotte Salter on the oboe and Gavin Hoang on the violin.
The programme was greatly varied and chosen to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities which Graham Scott managed with some ingenius registration. The first piece was Variations sur un Vieux Noël Français by Jean Bouvard. This piece comprised a theme and five short variations, which allowed Graham to demonstrate a wide range of colour. J S Bach’s Allegro from Sonata No 6 (BWV 1019) followed with Gavin Hoang on the violin. César Franck’s Prélude, Fugue et Variation was played next. Franck arguably established the concept of the ‘organ symphony’- multi-movement, large-scale pieces, a genre developed considerably by Widor and Vierne. The Prélude, Fugue et Variation is one of Franck’s major organ works.
Charlotte Salter performed Telemann’s Sonata in A minor: 1 Siciliana II Spirituoso alongside the organ. Graham finished the concert with a wonderful performance of Bach’s Fantasia super Komm, Heiliger Geist, Herre Gott (BWV 651). This is the first of the chorale preludes from the Leipzig manuscript and is based on the Whitsun antiphon Veni sancte spiritus.
