Ambitious young athlete to run first ever half marathon for Sporting Minds UK

17-year-old Finn S will be running her first half marathon to raise money for Sporting Minds UK later this month.

Finn took up running in order to keep fit during lockdown. Running is something which has grown on her, and she is more conscious than ever about the impact of sport on people’s mental health, positive or negative. Having had her own struggles with mental health during lockdown, Finn is now keen to focus on sport to promote mental health, as well as acknowledging the mental health challenges which athletes can face.

The half marathon will take place on Thursday 19 August on Finn’s treadmill at home.

Finn commented: “I took up running during such an uncertain time to help me be in the best position possible for when I was able to return to my chosen sports.

“After taking up running and seeing what a positive effect it had on me, although facing issues along the way, I wanted to turn my personal experience into something valuable and to help raise awareness amongst my friends, many of whom are sporty.

“Any athlete can experience significant mental health challenges during their journey and so I have chosen to support Sporting Minds UK as the charity provides one-to-one support for young athletes aged 16-30.”

Finn is an exemplary all-round young sportsperson and has already achieved tremendous success playing in Bryanston’s 1st teams for hockey and netball, as well as being involved in rowing, and enjoying swimming and tennis.

Finn added: “It’s my first time running a half marathon so it will be quite the challenge – please wish me luck!”
