Bryanstonians perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Bryanston’s touring company, Brylights, took two fantastic shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year.

Made up from recent leavers and current sixth form pupils, Brylights performed The Princess Initiative, written by Bryanston pupil Niamh Simpson (A2), and These Are The Best Days: A Revue, performed by a group of recent leavers, with material taken from a variety of 21st century plays and poetry, directed with a sure hand by 2013-2014 Drama Resident Nick Holden. Both performances took place in theSpace on the Mile at the Radisson Hotel on the Royal Mile, a central venue only metres from the Fringe Office.

The Princess Initiative was first performed as part of the A3 Festival in February this year and again with These Are The Best Days: A Revue –A3 at the end of the summer term as part of the Brylights’ Edinburgh Fringe preview.

Both productions allowed the students to take control of the material and develop it for different audiences and the company showed a thoroughly mature sense of what would work for different audiences, learning a great deal about taking a production from the more protected environment of a school into the competitive world and marketing it ferociously on the Royal Mile.

Director of Drama and Dance at Bryanston, Jane Quan, said, “It takes a great deal of energy and determination to tour the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, particularly with shows you have written yourself, and this year’s Brylights company more than rose to the challenge with characteristic style and self-confidence. I am very proud of everyone involved and delighted that they had such a fantastic Fringe experience. To our leavers – thank you for such a super final memory of all you have done over the last five years.”
