The Maru a Pula partnership

Last year 10 Bryanston pupils, accompanied by Duncan Fowler-Watt and Annabel Smith, took part in an inaugural trip to Botswana in July to stay at Maru a Pula School in Gaborone.

Pupils from Maru a PulaDuring their time out there, they became involved in numerous service projects in the community, including painting houses in the local SOS orphan village and joining in feeding projects in some of the more deprived areas of the city. We were warmly received by the Maru a Pula community and everyone involved had an inspiring and memorable time.

At the start of this term, we welcomed our first-ever Maru a Pula students, Lame, Olorato, Daniel and Moks. They joined us for just over two weeks and quickly became part of our community; joining in lessons, sports, activities and house suppers. They made a hugely positive impression on all the pupils they met: they gave a brilliant assembly, joined our A3 historians on a trip to see the Nelson Mandela exhibition in London, held discussions with pupils in junior years, led passionate debates on climate change and Daniel managed to break the school triple jump record on his first jump!

Lame, Olorato, Daniel and Moks were stunned and moved by the warm welcome they received from everyone they met at Bryanston and they left for home with a multitude of new experiences to remember and new friends to stay in touch with.

Next summer, it will be our turn again and 10 lucky A3 pupils will be given the chance to experience the vibrant and diverse community of Maru a Pula. Our hope is that this partnership will develop and flourish for many years to come and that pupils of both schools will benefit from the opportunities that this partnership provides.
