Departments and subjects

ART

Creativity is at the core of the Bryanston philosophy and much value has always been attached to freedom of expression in the arts. We have many exceptional artists and designers amongst our alumni, including Lucian Freud, Sir Howard Hodgkin and Sir Terence Conran.

CLASSICS

Classics, the study of the literature, language and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, has a strong tradition at Bryanston. All pupils study Latin in the first year, with a range of sets to cater for all previous levels of experience, including complete beginners.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Design & technology allows our pupils to be creative, imaginative and inspired. Under the guidance of our talented and experienced staff, pupils produce work of an outstanding standard and several have won some prestigious awards.

DRAMA

Drama at Bryanston has an excellent reputation and with 15-20 productions a year pupils have plenty of opportunities to perform, design and direct. There is a strong focus on pupil-directed drama, encouraging independence, creativity and initiative.

ECONOMICS & business

Economics is called a social science and is becoming an evermore popular subject both at Bryanston and elsewhere.

ENGLISH

Bryanston’s thriving English department is located in the heart of the main building. In teaching English language and literature to a wide range of abilities the department is able to play to the strengths of both learner and teacher.

GEOGRAPHY

Studying geography allows us to see how and why the world we live in is changing and enhances both our environmental awareness and our sense of place in the world.

HISTORY & POLITICS

The aim of the History & Politics Department is to ensure that pupils develop an enquiring mind with an ability to discuss different views and opinions, often contrary to their own, before reaching their own conclusions.

HISTORY OF ART

History of art is a richly stimulating AS and A level subject, in which pupils gain a sound understanding of the major periods of Western art history from antiquity to modernity, and develop the ability to articulate their ideas through lively class discussion and written analysis.

ICT

The ICT Department aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to a range of computing technologies and skills for those starting at Bryanston. This is then developed further through GCSE courses in computer science.

MATHEMATICS

The ethos of the Bryanston Mathematics Department is that our subject can, and should be, enjoyable and rewarding for all. Our aim is to develop the ability of our pupils to become creative problem solvers, which is the talent that lies at the heart of mathematical thinking.

MODERN Foreign LANGUAGES

In an increasingly inter-connected world languages are more important than ever and at Bryanston there is a focus not only on the importance of effective and authentic communication, but also on the cultures of the various languages taught.

MUSIC

Bryanston has an outstanding musical tradition, and music is at the heart of school life in every aspect – socially, academically and spiritually.  A focus on participation and performance ensures that music touches the lives of the whole school community.

Physical education

In academic PE pupils learn the anatomical, physiological and biomechanical concepts that govern performance and training at elite level. They also learn about the historical factors that have lead to the structure of sport as we know it today, and debate contemporary issues in sport.

PSRE

At Bryanston we are committed to providing an extensive programme of Personal, Social, Religious Education (PSRE), which includes health, citizenship, mental, economic and physical development education.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES and Philosophy

The principal aim of religious studies at Bryanston is to engage pupils in enquiring into the big questions in life from the study of religion, belief, philosophy and ethics.

SCIENCE

The science faculty at Bryanston has enjoyed considerable academic success and over half of our sixth-form pupils choose at least one science as part of their programme of study.
