Arts in Hospital Competition Winners

arts in hospitalArts in Hospital is a charity at Dorset County Hospital which aims to enhance the hospital environment and raise the spirits of patients, visitors and staff. The hospital has a collection of over 500 contemporary artworks, many in the public spaces, and uses visual arts, music, poetry and performance in its participatory projects with patients and staff. The charity’s recent Young Talent of Dorset Art Competition saw Bryanston pupils Louisa Newman, Nina Brooke and Caroline Harris scoop three out of four prizes, which not only means their work will tour other hospitals, but they will also spend a day with a participating artist of their choice. The pieces of art, themed Natural Forms, were judged in relation to the recent medical research which has shown that images of the natural world aid recovery and reduce stress.

Pupils Awarded Prestigious Arkwright Scholarships

arkwrightarkwrightPictured are Paddy Fernandez and Tom Frew receiving their Arkwright Scholarships for Design, Technology and Engineering. Arkwright's aim is to encourage and stimulate 15/16 year old students with high ability levels, to take up engineering or technological careers by awarding scholarships during 'A' Level courses funded by industry partners and charitable trusts. Some 473 schools enjoy the benefits of being a member of The Arkwright Scholarships Trust, but rarely are multiple awards received by an individual school. Director of Design Technology, Gary Burton, says, ‘We’re understandably very proud of their achievements and it’s testament to the hard work and effort they put into their studies.’

Telephone Campaign raises £125,000

telephoneDuring July, fifteen recent leavers took part in a two week campaign to raise funds for bursaries at Bryanston. They called nearly 800 OBs, almost half of whom pledged a donation. The callers also took the opportunity to discuss careers, give the School an update on OB news, and tell people about forthcoming events. The callers enjoyed the job, and judging by the letters we have since received so did many of the Bryanstonians they spoke to!

We were absolutely delighted with the response, with gifts and pledges totalling £125,000. The initial campaign target was £100,000, which with other monies raised this year will fund one full bursary.

Thank you to all the donors whose generosity will make a difference for many in the years to come.

Reunion for the Classes of 1965-69

reunion“Like many of my contemporaries, I had never been back to Bryanston since leaving 38 years ago, and I was in two minds (at least!) about whether to attend on this occasion. However in the event I greatly enjoyed the reunion (much more so than I’d expected, in fact) and I’m quite sure it won’t be another 38 years until my next visit!”

Over 130 OBs, staff and their families attended the 40 Year Reunion for the Classes of 1965 – 1969 on 14th July. Surprisingly for this summer it was a fine, dry day and our guests were able to enjoy the grounds at their leisure. As has become customary, we offered our guests the opportunity of a guided tour of the school and their old boarding houses with a current pupil. The tours were immensely popular with all but a very few OBs and their families taking part. Many came back saying that although the buildings had changed, the feel and ethos of the school remained intact and there were many comments about the Spartan boarding accommodation they had endured compared to the relative luxury of today’s boarding houses.

Although the reunion was held during the holidays the school was very busy that weekend, with the Dorset Youth Games being held on the playing fields and Dorset Opera, who were half way through their two week residence, rehearsing for their performances of Turandot. The reception was held in Dorchester, where Sarah Thomas welcomed the OBs and former staff back to Bryanston and at the end of which we were treated to a rendition of Nessun Dorma by Dorset Opera’s tenor. The year groups then split between Cowley (the Centre Room) and Grosvenor for a sumptuous lunch. As one OB commented “the food greatly exceeded anything experienced in my days at Bryanston.” In the afternoon our visitors had the chance to watch Tim King’s (D ’67) film Because that Road is Trodden in which several of those present had acted or had a part in producing. It proved to be a memorable and emotional experience for many. There was also the opportunity to watch The Telephone Campaign. The afternoon was rounded off by afternoon tea back in Cowley.

“We so enjoyed our day and found it difficult to pull ourselves away when it was time to say our farewells. The tour of the school, the reception, the lunch with open doors and its delightful recital will linger long in our memories.”

Welcome back OTW 2007 !

over the wallBryanston are delighted to welcome back the Over the Wall Summer Camp 2007. Over the Wall is the only residential camp in the UK structured on Paul Newman's renowned Hole in the Wall Gang camp which gives children one glorious week of experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound. The camp rebuilds their confidence and most importantly is a place where they can just be kids, not kids who are sick. As Paul Newman puts it "A place where kids can kick back, relax and raise a little hell". For more information about this inspirational charity visit www.otw.org.uk

Bryanston Society Midsummer Party

partyNearly one thousand people braved an unusually wet June afternoon to attend this year’s reunion. For many, it was the first time they had returned to their old school since leaving a number of decades ago. The somewhat brief reception on the terrace was quickly moved inside to Cowley to escape a downpour. A sumptuous lunch accompanied by Bryanston’s very own Jazz Band provided the perfect backdrop on which to hang old school tales and reminiscences. Many then took the opportunity to look around the new Sanger Centre, designed by Glyndebourne architects, Hopkins and Partners. The rain couldn't dampen spirits and ended with afternoon tea accompanied by yet another downpour.

James Blunt's Gibson Guitar

guitarBryanston teacher and Dorset based visual artist Paul Hart has finished creating multi platinum selling British artist James Blunt's ten foot Gibson Les Paul. The design, entitled 'A Blunt Instrument' was signed by James last week and will now go on public display around More London SE1, by Tower Bridge, for ten weeks. This guitar will form part of the main charity auction supported by Bruce Dickenson, Ossy Osbourne, Roxy Music, Gerald Scarf, Paul Weller, Sir Peter Blake and a host of other prominent musicians and artists, raising money for The Prince's Trust, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and Teenage Cancer Trust at an event later in the year.
James Blunt said "I am really pleased to be associated with Gibson Guitartown London as it seems like an amazing project which aims to raise lots of money for three fantastic and worthy charities". Paul Hart, who has illustrated and published drawings of Gibson guitars in the past, was thrilled to be asked to get involved with this project and both pupils and staff at Bryanston have enjoyed seeing it progress over the last few months.

A Comedy of Errors

JDSThe Junior Drama Society delivered a high energy production, with fast-paced action and some impressive performances. They managed to sustain the necessary apparent confusion of the story whilst never leaving the audience in the dark. The two Dromios, Eugene Simon and Raf Cross, revelled in their roles and carried the comedy very well. The two versions of Antipholus, Alex White and Charlie Alford, were equally effective. Further strong comedic performances came from Miranda Marsh and Lily Davies-Evitt who provided, amongst many other things, some particularly amusing cameo drunkenness. There was little danger of the attention being allowed to wander, but if it had done so, Flo Lunt's witchlike screams would definitely have succeeded in refocusing concentration.
All of the actors deserve credit for the outcome of their labours. Some very strong performances.

Jurassic Coast Fieldwork

fieldworkBryanston is ideally located for fieldwork in Geography, with Blandford's highly cost effective flood prevention scheme on our doorstep and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site within an hour's drive.
A recent trip to Chesil Beach gave A Level students the opportunity to marvel at the 18 mile long, 200 metre wide and 18 metre high shingle beach which forms an important stretch of the heritage coast. The aim of the field work was to ascertain the degree to which processes still operating may be responsible for the formation of this massive feature. Some say that fishermen familiar with the beach claim to be able to tell their location from pebble size alone which certainly gave pupils something to ponder over..

Reunion for the Classes of 1987 and 1997

reunionSaturday 5th May saw 177 OBs from the Classes of 1987 and 1997 and their families along with current and former staff enjoying a lovely sunny afternoon at Bryanston. The OBs had the chance in the morning before the main reception to have a go on the new climbing tower under the supervision of James Malden and to take a tour of their boarding house. While their parents enjoyed lunch and catching up with old friends a group of 6 to 13 year olds enjoyed the use of the Sports Centre. After lunch many wandered off to watch the tennis matches on the grass courts or the cricket match down on the playing fields or just sat on the terrace enjoying the sunshine and the company. Some however took the opportunity to have a look round the soon to be handed over new Sanger Centre for Maths and Sciences. The official reunion ended all too soon after Tea but carried on unofficially into the small hours in Blandford.

A Walk in the Woods

imageThis year’s annual sponsored 12 mile walk saw over 500 pupils, parents and staff enjoying perfect conditions for a stroll in the beautiful north Dorset countryside. The course headed out from School in a loop over Coombe Down, up to lunch at Ibberton which provided a perfect backdrop for the BBQ, and then back through the stunning bluebell woods. Our thanks are extended to all those who took part and who have contributed sponsorship money. The money is still being collected, but it has been reported that some boarding houses have topped the £1000 mark, so congratulations to them! The money raised from this event will go towards funding the sports ground and facilities for the street children of Pokhara in Nepal. Sport is such an important activity for these children and contributes to their health, self esteem and future development. For further details about the charity please log onto www.childwelfarescheme.org or contact Sarah Stacpoole at School on saes@bryanston.co.uk.

Rugby Windsor Sevens

Despite battling against severe weather conditions, the 1st VII played very well in the group and won all four games beating RGS High Wycombe 17:0, Latymer Upper 31:5, Bedford 41:5 and Magdalen College School 24:14. The Bryanston team beat Hampton 46:0 in the quarter final, which put them in the semi-final against Eton College. This was an excellent game which saw Bryanston matching Eton in defence, but out-performing in attack, finishing winners 29:5. In the final Bryanston once again met RGS High Wycombe showing the strength of the group. In a gruelling game in the mud they showed real resilience against a two term rugby school to win the final 17:10. Well done to Henry Pyrgos (Captain), Archie Stead, Iain Pearce, Tom Smith, Adam Bellamy, Guy Ridley, Miles Bosoni, John Beloe, Archie Lloyd and Rory Murdoch.

OB Cross Country Race

A fine afternoon on Saturday saw the club’s runners take on the Old Bryanstonians on an entertaining two lap course. Having decided to eschew the lake that sat on the left of the games pitches and taken a pledge not to tell QC that they had wimped out, the runners set off. There were some fine performances from runners of all ages, and the Old Bryanstonians emerged victorious in both the real time race and when the times were adjusted to allow for age handicapping. It was a great pleasure to see so many old club members return, and the day was hugely enjoyable.

Heads of School organise successful charity weekend raising £5000 for

The Karenni Student Development Programme

imageA current affairs talk at the beginning of term enthused this year’s Heads’ of School to organise a charity weekend in honour of the Karenni Student Development Programme (www.karennisu.org). Highlights of the weekend included a blues concert on Saturday night, followed by a fascinating talk on Sunday morning by Old Bryanstonian Ben Fogle. After lunch there was a treasure hunt, followed by a football tournament, which all year groups entered. The male staff took on the A2 girls at netball and much to the girls embarrassment lost to the teachers! An incredible violin recital in the EEMR by an Old Bryanstonian Ruth Rogers and her accompanist Martin Cousin preceded a closed auction and a student auction of promises.
Benjy and Bryony extend their thanks to all those who helped. ‘We are very grateful to all those who donated things for the auctions and who supported the charity, enabling us to raise such an impressive amount of money.'

hockey teamBryanston Triumphant at hockey regional finals

Bryanston's boys' hockey team returned victorious from the recent west of England U16 finals at Millfield. After drawing 1:1 with Marlborough and 2:2 with Prior Park, the group was decided by the Bryanston v Dean Close match which ended in a 2:1 win for Bryanston and secured them top place in the group. Next opponents in the semi-final were Exeter School, fresh from eliminating Millfield, which ended in a 2:1 win for Bryanston. The final against Elizabeth College, Guernsey began explosively and Bryanston took a 3:0 lead in the first five minutes, with two goals from Freddie Strange and one from Dean Pearce. The Channel Islanders fought back and it was close at the end but Bryanston enjoyed a famous win by 3:2.

British Schoolgirls' Ski Competition

skiingTamsin Hartley, Alice Kelway Bamber and Tatty Woodhouse ventured to France to represent Bryanston in this national competition. They competed in two slalom races (the giant slalom had to be cancelled due to lack of snow) and did extremely well to finish in 3rd position overall in the team event. Tamsin's time was also impressive enough to gain her a third place in the individual event, making her the third fastest schoolgirl on skis in the country!

Equipping pupils for university and beyond

For some years Bryanston has consistently been in the top 5% of schools in the country for value added to GCSE results. This year’s results follow a similar pattern. These value added tables, derived from figures published by the Department for Education and Skills, show the value schools add to pupil performance from Key Stage 2 to GCSE. They take into account the different individual starting points and allow comparisons to be made between schools with varying academic intakes. Many parents feel that it is these tables that bear the most importance, when deciding which school to choose for their children, because they record the academic development of the individual child.
