Classicists tour Greece’s ancient sites

In the first week of the Easter holidays, the Classics Department took 29 Classicists from A3 and A2 on a tour of some of Greece’s best ancient sites and museums.

The tour started in Athens with two museums; the ancient civic centre (the Agora) and the stunning Acropolis, with the Parthenon among other temples. Pupils studying Classical Civilisation pupils spent time explaining to the rest of the group all the sculpture and architecture, which they had studied previously.

Subsequent days took in the beautiful island of Aegina, with another fine temple and good local sea food, the panoramic mountain-side site of Delphi, home of Apollo’s oracle, and the ruined but atmospheric site of Olympia, origin of the Olympic games. Toby K saw off all opposition in a race down the original Olympic stadium, while Nye M managed to keep ahead of a horde of French girls.

The final day took the group to the vast stone theatre of Epidaurus and the magnificent hilltop fortress of Mycenae, from where Agamemnon set off for the Trojan war.

Everyone involved enjoyed sunny weather, tasty Greek cuisine, and a lot of good humour: many thanks to Mr Holland, Dr Fearnley, Mr Fowler-Watt and Miss Blondelle for enabling such a memorable visit.
