School Life - Sport
Sport is important at Bryanston and success is achieved at the highest levels. The important thing, however, is that all pupils take part and many, who may not previously have thought of themselves as games players, are able to represent the School in a wide variety of sports. In this way, sport enhances the individual's sense of belonging, achievement and self-confidence.
Pupils normally play a major sport on at least three afternoons a week. Choice will depend on the school term, but the range includes athletics, cricket, cross-country, rugby, hockey, netball, rowing, squash and tennis. In addition, pupils can participate in archery, badminton, basketball, fencing, Eton fives, kayaking, lacrosse, riding, sailing, shooting, soccer and swimming.
The School has outstanding sports facilities for use during games time and during free time. The playing fields cover 56 acres and include 2 artificial pitches, 46 tennis courts, 9 netball courts and a 400 metre athletics track. The playing fields are bounded by the River Stour for rowing and kayaking. The School has its own riding stables, all-weather riding manège and cross-country course and, in Poole Harbour, a private pontoon and fleet of sailing dinghies. The Sports Centre contains a multi-use sports hall, a well-equipped gymnasium, a fitness room, 4 squash courts, 3 fives courts and a 25 metre heated indoor swimming pool. PE is an integral part of the junior school curriculum. Sport Studies is offered in the Sixth Form.
