The Equestrian Centre was established approximately 13 years ago and since then has undergone considerable expansion in terms of facilities and the number of pupils riding and horses kept at livery. The stables form part of the original Bryanston House designed by Wyatt in the mid-18th century and form an attractive horseshoe shape around a central courtyard.
The centre is British Horse Society approved and is a training course for BHS Stage 1 to Stage 4 Preliminary and Intermediate teaching examinations. Facilities include a 30m x 20m indoor school, a 70m x 30m outdoor arena, a cross-country schooling area and a well-resourced lecture room.
Riding at Bryanston
All pupils at Bryanston have the opportunity to ride. School horses are available for weekly use by pupils who do not have their own. Riding is considered to be an extra-curricular activity, where a pupil can learn from and enjoy their equestrian experience, whether it be an educational lesson, a hack or more specified training towards competitive riding. Pupils with their own horses on full livery may choose riding as their sport option and train with their own horses several times a week. As it is a BHS approved centre, lessons are also available for members of the public and can be booked by phoning the centre direct.
Keeping Horses at Bryanston
A horse may be kept at Bryanston on a full or working livery basis. In both cases, the horse is looked after by the Equestrian Centre staff, but full livery horses are ridden solely by their owners. Working livery horses would be ridden by other pupils or outside clients. Pupils with horses on full livery normally opt for riding as their sport. Those with horses on working livery ride them in their pre-booked weekly lessons and at weekends. Full details of livery arrangements are available on request.
Bryanston Equestrian Centre Staff
The Equestrian Centre currently has four well-qualified teaching staff who strive to encourage pupils at all levels to achieve. All staff compete in various equestrian disciplines, providing pupils with a wide range of horse-related knowledge and competencies. This ensures a diverse teaching curriculum with the equestrian centre.
The BHSAI Course
The British Horse Society Assistant Instructor Certificate training is offered in the sixth form and complements A-levels with a recognised vocational level 3 equestrian training qualification. More information about the BHS exams can be found at www.bhs.org.uk
Competitions
Dressage, show jumping and BHS Trec competitions are held regularly throughout the year and all pupils are encouraged to participate. Bryanston regularly sends competitive teams to ride in inter-schools' show jumping and one-day events. Riders at all levels are encouraged to compete at local venues, which gives the riders a chance to evaluate the skills learnt in lessons.
Riding and road safety is of paramount importance for any pupil hacking on the roads. Training and examinations are held at Bryanston twice a year.
